The placenta is considered rich in hormone and nutrients like iron and protein, making it especially useful to mothers recovering from childbirth. The theory behind placentophagy is that you are returning the nutrients lost during the birth process back to the body, aiding in a quick and smooth postpartum recovery. The placenta’s hormonal make-up is completely unique for each woman and is said to be “Made for you, by you”.
The potential benefits of placenta encapsulation include:
- Decrease in baby blues and postpartum depression.
- Increase milk supply.
- Increase in energy.
- Decrease in lochia (postpartum bleeding).
- Decrease iron deficiency.
- Decrease insomnia or sleep disorders.
There are two main methods for placental encapsulation: Raw vs Traditional Chinese Method (TCM). Soluna is professionally trained and certified in both. The primary difference between the two methods lies in whether the placenta is steamed or not before dehydration and encapsulation. Both methods involve gently cleaning and dehydrating the placenta, but the TCM method steams it before dehydrating, often with warming herbs thought to balance Yin and Yang. (Soluna offers it with or without herbs during the steaming, per your preference.) The steaming process also potentially makes it more palatable for some.
Capsules prepared via the TCM Method are considered shelf stable and are said to store safely in your freezer indefinitely. In addition to their immediate postpartum benefits, TCM method prepared placentas may also be used in other healing recipes (edibles, salves, tinctures, etc.) at any time, or just saved for use at future times when you may experience a decrease in milk supply, PMS, or even stored longer-term for use during menopause.
The Raw Method is said to be more potent because it prioritizes preserving the potential raw nutritional and hormonal content of the placenta. It’s with noting that the placentas encapsulated via the Raw Method will only last one year in the freezer. You can however, still make a tincture with a small piece of the raw placenta, for longer term use as well.
